who we are the garifunas?
For decades I have heard references about our ancestry; on one hand we tend to recite very well the history left by our oppressors in the past. Let us remember, we are not just Africans descendants. We are one of the last links to the first free groups in Native America. We are Arawkans. Despite our limited knowledge of how that happened, we are also decendents of the those fierecly free and proud community- spirited people.
It"s time for us to honor Satuye, the Arawkan, who was a freedom-fighter in defense of his community, his culture and his land. Understanding that cultures evolve, Garifunas have evolved. We remain free, yet capable of adapting to new challenges concerning interactions with each other and with the many cultures of world.
Garifuna be proud of who you are: An Arawkan-African.
